AI Overview triggers, hand-checked

Twenty-one keywords, one browser, one day — the full table, the query string that produced it, and the four limits that bound it.

What an AI overview tracker measures, and what one hand check already shows

An AI overview tracker watches whether a keyword returns a Google AI Overview and what it says; you can answer the first half of that question yourself, for any keyword, in about a minute, and this page publishes one such check in full. On 15 August 2026 we looked up 21 commercial keywords one at a time in a browser and recorded whether an AI Overview appeared above the organic results. 17 of the 21 did — 81% — and every one of the 10 keywords with 300+ monthly searches triggered one, with no exceptions. The 4 that did not were long-tail and brand-combination terms. We do not sell a tracker; the table below is the raw result, the method is a URL you can paste, and the limits are printed underneath rather than buried.

The check, in full

Every keyword we looked at, in search-volume order. Volumes are Google Keyword Planner figures from 9 August 2026; the AI Overview column is what the browser showed on 15 August 2026.

The head terms triggered without exception: 10 of 10 keywords at 300+ searches a month returned an AI Overview. That is the number with a consequence — on those queries the first organic result now sits below a generated answer, so a plan that assumes ranking equals clicks is a plan built on the wrong page layout.

The 4 that did not trigger were plumber answering service, ai answering service for plumbers, jobber ai receptionist, housecall pro answering service. All of them are long-tail, brand-combination or newly-coined terms, which is the pattern you would expect where Google has little material to summarise. Treat that as a window rather than a moat: it closes as content accumulates.

How to run the same check yourself

The query string is the whole method:

https://www.google.com/search?q=YOUR+KEYWORD&pws=0&gl=us&hl=en

pws=0 asks Google to set personalisation aside; gl=us&hl=en pins country and language. Open it, look at whether a generated answer sits above the blue links, write down yes or no. Twenty keywords take about twenty minutes and cost nothing.

What a tool adds is repetition, not accuracy: the same list on a schedule, stored, so you can see a keyword gain or lose its AI Overview. That is worth paying for once you have a list worth watching — and worth nothing before you do.

What we have not connected

Google AI Overviews has no official API. Collecting it at scale means a third-party search-results provider, and in our own tool that leg is written and unit-tested but has never made a real call — so the table above is a hand check, and the honest word for our AI Overview coverage today is none. The home page keeps the same list of what is and is not connected, and it is the first thing we would change if you asked what we can actually measure for you.

What we do run live is ChatGPT and Claude, on questions written the way customers ask them — the audit page lists exactly what comes back, and what ChatGPT cites shows what one run looked like end to end.

AI Overview questions

What does an AI overview tracker actually do?

It re-runs a list of keywords on a schedule and records whether each one returns a Google AI Overview, and usually what the overview says and which sites it draws on. The single-keyword version of that check is a URL you can open yourself, which is what this page publishes.

How often do keywords trigger an AI Overview?

In this check, 17 of 21 keywords did — but all 21 were US answering-service and virtual-receptionist terms looked up once on one day, so the figure describes that list and not search in general.

Do high-volume keywords trigger AI Overviews more often?

In this sample, every keyword with 300 or more monthly searches triggered one — 10 out of 10 — while the keywords that did not trigger were long-tail and brand-combination terms.

How do I check one keyword by hand?

Open google.com/search with your keyword plus pws=0&gl=us&hl=en and look at whether a generated answer appears above the organic results. pws=0 only weakens personalisation, and your IP still sets the location, so treat the result as one observation rather than a fact about everybody's search page.

Do you track AI Overviews for clients?

Not today. The Google AI Overviews leg of our tool is implemented and unit-tested but has never made a real call, so we do not count it among the engines we measure. ChatGPT and Claude are the two that are live-tested.
